Solving a word search from an image is faster than typing in every letter by hand. Here's how to do it right and get accurate results every time.
Why Solve From an Image?
A typical word search grid has 150 to 400 letters. Typing them all manually takes minutes and introduces errors. Photo-based solving lets you skip the tedious data entry — just snap a picture and let OCR (optical character recognition) do the work.
How Photo-Based Solving Works
When you upload a word search photo, three things happen:
- Image upload — your photo is sent securely to our cloud server
- Character recognition — Amazon Textract scans the image and identifies each letter, row by row
- Grid construction — the recognized letters are arranged into a grid that matches your original puzzle
The entire process takes 2-5 seconds depending on image quality and grid size.
Tips for the Best Photo Results
Getting a clean photo makes a huge difference in accuracy:
- Good lighting — natural light works best, avoid harsh shadows across the grid
- Flat surface — lay the puzzle flat to avoid warping and perspective distortion
- Tight crop — use the built-in crop tool to exclude everything except the letter grid
- Correct orientation — make sure letters read left-to-right, use the rotate button if your photo is sideways
- Separate uploads — upload the letter grid and word list as separate photos for the highest accuracy
Common Issues and Fixes
- Single row of letters — your photo is sideways. Use the rotate button before uploading
- Wrong letters — poor lighting or blurry photos cause misreads. Retake the photo or manually correct letters in the grid
- Missing rows — the crop was too tight at the edges. Include a small margin around the grid
- Mixed up O and 0 — OCR sometimes confuses the letter O with the number zero. Check and correct if needed
When to Use AI Mode
Standard OCR works well for clearly printed puzzles with good contrast. For trickier images — handwritten puzzles, unusual fonts, colored backgrounds, or newspaper puzzles with thin print — toggle on AI mode. It uses a vision model that understands context and handles imperfect images better.
